Check out some fantastic animation by Luis Cook. The film is a bit disturbing, but aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.

WHY?

April 20, 2008

This past Friday, I had the privilege to see WHY? perform live.

PROS:

  1. Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf can play 3 instruments at the same time, while singing and standing! Impressive.
  2. All my favorites were performed. I hate it when I go to a show and through out the whole act I wait for my one song to be played and if I I don’t hear it performed by the time the bands says, “This is our last one…” I leave feeling a bit dejected.
  3. Intimate space at Holocene = extra enjoyment when seeing a band live

CONS:

  1. Late Start. The show was scheduled to start at 9 PM. The first 3 performers started at 10 PM. WHY? came on stage at midnight.
  2. 3 openings acts before the main act. When the bands, and their music, are foreign to my ears, they have the ability to slow down time.
  3. Girl to my left smelt like an ash tray and black butte porter. Delicious.

OBSERVATIONS:

  1. Patrons new to Holocene, appear confused when they first walk through the doors. Blank stares cast their faces, as their eyes wander, and their mouths drop open, ready to dispel the words, “What? Where? Why? and When?” The bar and dance floor, in front of them, causes them to feel a bit perplexed as they try to figure out where the show is.
  2. Two girls wore stuffed animals on their heads…or maybe they were furry hats with ears.
  3. Only drunk people dance.
  4. When a cute drunk girl almost falls on you, and apologizes for her mishap, it’s not really annoying, it’s charming.

Usugrow

April 7, 2008

Yesterday, some friends and I went to Upper Playground to check out the Fifty24PDX gallery. I loved it. Probably my favorite visit to the gallery yet. Currently, Usugrow is showing some of his illustrations. They are amazing! I’ve seen his stuff in Juxtapoz, but it’s even better in person. I’m a sucker for black and white illustrations and I love his line work. Until I stood up close to one of his pieces, I had no idea he used stippling for the shading. It was pretty impressive. We missed the opening night, but it was awesome, because when we walked in the door, Usurgrow was there, drawing roses on the wall. It was pretty cool. I couldn’t help but gawk. I recommend you check it out if you live in Portland (23 NW 5th Ave).
